The Business Blog Lives On

I think I started blogging about 4 years ago now. Even then I was late to the party but it was a personal thing so that didn’t matter back then. But I quickly got signed up to do ghost blogging for businesses. Then as I developed my freelance career as a consultant and businesses started to realise the value in blogging, business blogging became a standard and frequent request. Many said it wouldn’t last; blogging had a limited shelf life and something else would come along. Well here we are and business blogging is alive and well. Who are we to argue? WordPress alone boast in excess of 75 million and no signs of slowing down. As of 2011, over 100,000 new WordPresses are created every day! (via http://en.wordpress.com/stats/ )

Google’s latest algorithm update Hummingbird, which we previously posted about, has given a new lease of life to the business blog. With regular good quality original content required to assist in the all important Google rankings, it is suffice to say that blogging for business is not only alive and well, but essential to stay ahead of the game. Google rankings aside, blogging still has many other qualities that should not be ignored. Providing your customers with a transparent communication channel, in addition to social media platforms, is a great way to get your messaging across in a competitive market place.

Blogging for business provides you with a way to reach customers in a different manner; provide them with that ‘above and beyond’ service we all demand as consumers; convince them you are a leader in your market, and give them that little bit extra. Look at it as your ‘added value’. Everyone likes to think they are getting something for nothing, a great offer, or special treatment. If you book a holiday you are going to go with the company who offer (at no extra charge), free cancellation, a welcome package and free transfers as apposed the the company who offer nothing at all, right? Your business blog is the perfect way to offer this to your customers.

Your business blog in conjunction with your social media platforms which all adopt the same tone of voice, is your way of giving your business influence, credibility, respect and personality.

Public relations (PR) is not a new invention. In fact, the precursor to modern PR can trace its origins back centuries to the early days of mass media in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Of course, the world has changed considerably since then and the arrival of the internet forced the PR profession, along with many others, to evolve once again. This is when digital PR entered the frame. What is digital PR? As its name suggests, digital PR specifically focuses on reaching your customers in their online worlds. It’s not the same as digital marketing, but digital PR activities should tie in closely with your broader marketing strategy. Digital PR is all about starting conversations with your audience and making sure they see and hear from you in an increasingly noisy online environment. That means it needs to be carefully targeted to ensure it not only reaches the right people but that it also delivers the right message. In this way, it is not dissimilar to traditional PR, which involves placing clients in relevant print publications or broadcast shows to widen their reach. However, in the digital world, life works slightly differently. This means targeted campaigns are particularly important and the messaging you use needs to be adapted for different channels.

In sub-Saharan Africa, an interesting relationship takes place hippos and oxpecker birds (honestly, bear with me on this one). The hippo needs help with the ticks and parasites that live on its skin and the oxpeckers help out by picking off the parasites and eating them. The oxpeckers get what they want – a tasty meal. And the hippo gets cleaner, healthier skin. It’s a win-win situation. It's impossible to say whether either species values the other—but each undoubtedly plays a vital role in the other's wellbeing. This example of mutualism often comes to mind when people talk about the relationship between journalists and PRs. It’s a case of mutuality, without question, but there’s often a simmering animosity between the two. To generate truly effective PR you need to understand the needs of both sides. And that’s where Flourish excels.
