Welcome to Mikaela Walker - Senior Account Executive

Before I begin telling you a little bit more about myself and my journey in to Public Relations, I should introduce myself, I’m Mikaela Walker and the newest recruit to the lovely team at Flourish PR.

Let’s dig in…w hilst studying Politics and International Relations BA at the University of Southampton I began delving into career options that would be complimented by my degree. As a people person with a love for current affairs, Public Relations stood out to me as a perfect fit.

After completing my degree, I secured my first Public Relations role with an agency based in London as an Account Executive. This was where my fascination with the impact that the media can have on a company ’s reputation grew . It was during this position that I wrote my first press release, went to my first client meeting, spoke to the first journalist and achieved my first piece of coverage for a client - all of these things affirmed that this was the career for me.

I have fallen in love with the fast-paced nature of the industry along with the opportunit ies to build valuable relationships with clients, which is hugely rewarding. The thought and creativity that goes into developing a successful media campaign for a client is also something I admire, and I look forward to honing this skill. Seeing my client’s name in some of the biggest national papers and hearing how this positively impacts their brand can really make a morning.

Since accepting my new position as a Senior Account Executive and joining Flourish PR , I haven’t looked back. Whilst still in my first few days at Flourish PR , I already feel at home and can see a long future with the team ahead of me.

Public relations (PR) is not a new invention. In fact, the precursor to modern PR can trace its origins back centuries to the early days of mass media in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Of course, the world has changed considerably since then and the arrival of the internet forced the PR profession, along with many others, to evolve once again. This is when digital PR entered the frame. What is digital PR?  As its name suggests, digital PR specifically focuses on reaching your customers in their online worlds. It’s not the same as digital marketing, but digital PR activities should tie in closely with your broader marketing strategy. Digital PR is all about starting conversations with your audience and making sure they see and hear from you in an increasingly noisy online environment. That means it needs to be carefully targeted to ensure it not only reaches the right people but that it also delivers the right message. In this way, it is not dissimilar to traditional PR, which involves placing clients in relevant print publications or broadcast shows to widen their reach. However, in the digital world, life works slightly differently. This means targeted campaigns are particularly important and the messaging you use needs to be adapted for different channels.

In sub-Saharan Africa, an interesting relationship takes place hippos and oxpecker birds (honestly, bear with me on this one). It’s a case of mutuality, without question, but there’s often a simmering animosity between the two. To generate truly effective PR you need to understand the needs of both sides.
