How To Improve Your Blogging Skills In 2019

A massive part of running a business these days is running a successful website. Without an active web presence, you run the risk that potential customers will doubt your legitimacy and shop elsewhere because they’re unable to find out quickly whether or not you’re a trusted brand.

With an active website and blog, you immediately show people that you’re out there, that you’re contactable and that you’re working hard to gain their trust.

But unless you’ve had lots of social media training and are well used to writing, it can be hard to publish blogs that achieve everything you’re trying to. Here are a few ways in which you can drive traffic to your site and boost engagement, just through the simple act of putting words on a page.

Consider what your target market actually wants

Always write a post that will have some use to your target market, thinking about what they’re most likely to want to read. If you’re launching a new product, what about creating a video to go alongside it that shows them how to use it, for example? This is known as evergreen content – content that will last, unlike other transient blog posts that may well only be read in the week that they’re posted online and then forgotten about later down the line.

Think in-depth

If your primary goal for your blog is to increase your rankings where search engines are concerned, create a few in-depth blog posts as the likes of Google and Bing really do prefer this. But, by the same token, so do visitors to your site so create some long-form content to keep everyone happy.

Bring in some pictures

They say that a picture speaks 1,000 words and images can really help to bring your blog posts to life. It can be hard for people to read big chunky paragraphs of text online so break it all up with a few relevant pictures here and there. Also try to avoid using stock photography as it doesn’t feel genuine and people can certainly tell the difference between your photos and a random one you’ve paid for.

Don’t forget to share your posts

It’s an easy mistake to make and one that lots of small business owners do – they post a brilliant blog on their site and then forget to share it. You can’t expect people to just come across your wonderful content… you’ve got to be more proactive and make sure you put it right in front of them. So share your links on relevant forums and across all your social media platforms to boost visibility.

Public relations (PR) is not a new invention. In fact, the precursor to modern PR can trace its origins back centuries to the early days of mass media in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Of course, the world has changed considerably since then and the arrival of the internet forced the PR profession, along with many others, to evolve once again. This is when digital PR entered the frame. What is digital PR? As its name suggests, digital PR specifically focuses on reaching your customers in their online worlds. It’s not the same as digital marketing, but digital PR activities should tie in closely with your broader marketing strategy. Digital PR is all about starting conversations with your audience and making sure they see and hear from you in an increasingly noisy online environment. That means it needs to be carefully targeted to ensure it not only reaches the right people but that it also delivers the right message. In this way, it is not dissimilar to traditional PR, which involves placing clients in relevant print publications or broadcast shows to widen their reach. However, in the digital world, life works slightly differently. This means targeted campaigns are particularly important and the messaging you use needs to be adapted for different channels.

In sub-Saharan Africa, an interesting relationship takes place hippos and oxpecker birds (honestly, bear with me on this one). The hippo needs help with the ticks and parasites that live on its skin and the oxpeckers help out by picking off the parasites and eating them. The oxpeckers get what they want – a tasty meal. And the hippo gets cleaner, healthier skin. It’s a win-win situation. It's impossible to say whether either species values the other—but each undoubtedly plays a vital role in the other's wellbeing. This example of mutualism often comes to mind when people talk about the relationship between journalists and PRs. It’s a case of mutuality, without question, but there’s often a simmering animosity between the two. To generate truly effective PR you need to understand the needs of both sides. And that’s where Flourish excels.
