Top Tips To Optimise Your Social Media Strategy

By now you’ll know that your online marketing is vital for your business’ success. You might have a blog on your website, regularly be putting out digital press releases and feel as though you’re on top of content creation in general.

However, have you considered whether your social media strategy could use a bit of work? There are a number of steps you can take to make the most of your social media channels, as Kristopher Jones, founder and CEO of SEO at LSEO, recently explained in an article for Forbes.

Often it’s easy to treat social media as an afterthought, or to be overly casual about how often you’re posting and what content you’re sharing because of the more informal nature of these platforms.

By doing so, you’ll be missing out on all the benefits that having a social media presence can have for your brand.

Mr Jones’ first tip is to establish goals for your social media marketing. He explained that these goals will then help to determine your social media strategy. As examples, he suggested a goal could be growing brand awareness, driving new sales or increasing traffic to your website.

He noted that which goals are most appropriate for your company will depend on what stage of development your business is at. As a startup, for instance, you’ll be more likely to be focused on growing brand awareness, whereas a more established business might be looking more closely at sales.

Social media is all about people communicating with people, so you need to know who you’re talking to in each interaction and with each piece of content so that you can tailor it accordingly.

Defining your audience won’t only dictate how you speak to them and what you share, but also where you focus your efforts. After all, it’s no good spending lots of time and money on Facebook marketing if the majority of your target audience prefer to use TikTok.

Coming up with content for your social media channels should be based on who you’re targeting and what you want them to do after seeing a post. You can use analytics data to help you here, as this will allow you to see what posts have performed well in the past.

An article for Business2Community recently highlighted just why social media is so important for businesses in this day and age, noting that it’s an excellent way to reach a large number of people very easily.

It also allows you to target customers who are not geographically close to you if this is something that your business can support.

According to the publication, social media is particularly useful for building brand awareness when you are a new business, because of the reach it offers and because it allows people to get involved in genuine conversations about your brand and products.

Sharing stories is an especially good way to make the most of these platforms if your primary aim is to build brand awareness, it added.

Public relations (PR) is not a new invention. In fact, the precursor to modern PR can trace its origins back centuries to the early days of mass media in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Of course, the world has changed considerably since then and the arrival of the internet forced the PR profession, along with many others, to evolve once again. This is when digital PR entered the frame. What is digital PR? As its name suggests, digital PR specifically focuses on reaching your customers in their online worlds. It’s not the same as digital marketing, but digital PR activities should tie in closely with your broader marketing strategy. Digital PR is all about starting conversations with your audience and making sure they see and hear from you in an increasingly noisy online environment. That means it needs to be carefully targeted to ensure it not only reaches the right people but that it also delivers the right message. In this way, it is not dissimilar to traditional PR, which involves placing clients in relevant print publications or broadcast shows to widen their reach. However, in the digital world, life works slightly differently. This means targeted campaigns are particularly important and the messaging you use needs to be adapted for different channels.

In sub-Saharan Africa, an interesting relationship takes place hippos and oxpecker birds (honestly, bear with me on this one). The hippo needs help with the ticks and parasites that live on its skin and the oxpeckers help out by picking off the parasites and eating them. The oxpeckers get what they want – a tasty meal. And the hippo gets cleaner, healthier skin. It’s a win-win situation. It's impossible to say whether either species values the other—but each undoubtedly plays a vital role in the other's wellbeing. This example of mutualism often comes to mind when people talk about the relationship between journalists and PRs. It’s a case of mutuality, without question, but there’s often a simmering animosity between the two. To generate truly effective PR you need to understand the needs of both sides. And that’s where Flourish excels.
