How To Get Ahead With Social Media Marketing

Most businesses accept that they need to use social media channels as part of their marketing mix. But not all know how to use them effectively to reach out to consumers and create real engagement with their content.

Business2Communityrecently offered some advice for businesses looking to make more of their social media presence, as well as explaining why it’s so important to get ahead with this.

For example, the news provider pointed out that research has shown 77 per cent of consumers are more likely to buy from a brand they follow on social media. What’s more, 71 per cent of people who’ve had a positive experience a brand on social media are likely to recommend that brand to their friends.

You can begin to see why it’s so important to not only have a strong social media presence, but also to engage positively with those who follow you on various channels.

So, where do you start if you want to run successful social media marketing campaigns? According to the news provider, you should start with a plan. Consistency is the key to being successful in this area.

“Creating a plan to guide your content and interaction across social networks will help you stay on message and make sure you keep the accounts active and your information relevant,” the article stated.

This means you need to set aside time to update your social profiles regularly and to schedule content to ensure that your followers have a steady stream of things popping up in their feeds.

However, it’s important that you direct your efforts at the most appropriate social media channels. That means you need to research your customer base and understand which social networks they’re most active on. There’s no point in wasting time and money creating content for a platform that your target audience typically doesn’t use.

When it comes to the content you’re sharing, there are two rules you need to follow. The first is to regularly update with content. That means quantity throughout the year is important.

But the caveat to that is that your content needs to be of a good quality. It has to be interesting to those you’re targeting, otherwise they may stop following you. Similarly, if you update your profiles too often, you risk turning people off.

It’s all about finding that sweet spot where you’re giving people relevant and interesting content on a regular basis.

Once your content is up there, you can’t just ignore it. You need to keep an eye on how people react to it and respond where necessary. Replying to comments or messages, as well as to shares, is essential to make people feel like they have a connection to your brand.

Earlier this year, we offered some advice on how to create the kind of content people want to seefrom brands on social media. People revealed that they like brands that respond to questions with video content, showing how important it is to use a variety of mediums to reach out to different target audiences.

Public relations (PR) is not a new invention. In fact, the precursor to modern PR can trace its origins back centuries to the early days of mass media in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Of course, the world has changed considerably since then and the arrival of the internet forced the PR profession, along with many others, to evolve once again. This is when digital PR entered the frame. What is digital PR? As its name suggests, digital PR specifically focuses on reaching your customers in their online worlds. It’s not the same as digital marketing, but digital PR activities should tie in closely with your broader marketing strategy. Digital PR is all about starting conversations with your audience and making sure they see and hear from you in an increasingly noisy online environment. That means it needs to be carefully targeted to ensure it not only reaches the right people but that it also delivers the right message. In this way, it is not dissimilar to traditional PR, which involves placing clients in relevant print publications or broadcast shows to widen their reach. However, in the digital world, life works slightly differently. This means targeted campaigns are particularly important and the messaging you use needs to be adapted for different channels.

In sub-Saharan Africa, an interesting relationship takes place hippos and oxpecker birds (honestly, bear with me on this one). The hippo needs help with the ticks and parasites that live on its skin and the oxpeckers help out by picking off the parasites and eating them. The oxpeckers get what they want – a tasty meal. And the hippo gets cleaner, healthier skin. It’s a win-win situation. It's impossible to say whether either species values the other—but each undoubtedly plays a vital role in the other's wellbeing. This example of mutualism often comes to mind when people talk about the relationship between journalists and PRs. It’s a case of mutuality, without question, but there’s often a simmering animosity between the two. To generate truly effective PR you need to understand the needs of both sides. And that’s where Flourish excels.
