5 Online Reputation Management Tips For Businesses

A mistake that brands often make – a forgivable one, but a mistake all the same – is to neglect the concept of reputation management until something negative happens and they are forced to implement a damage control strategy. If this sounds like the kind of policy you and your company have in place, your success in the 21st century is going to be incredibly limited and you won’t get where you want to be.

The trick to getting it right from the outset is understanding that you’ve got to be more proactive and less reactionary if you’re going to overtake your competition and stay well ahead of them now and into the future. Here are some top tips to help you win over the online world this year.

Have an optimised press kit at the ready

Being transparent is a brilliant way of making an excellent first impression so perhaps consider having a press kit somewhere on your website, where people can go to find out all sorts of facts about your company, as well as any photos and videos that you might have.

Journalists particularly like it when they can find facts and company timelines with ease – so ensure they have as much info at their fingertips as you can.

Prioritise positive online reviews

Every single business out there will have bad reviews and unfortunately, people are far, far more likely to leave negative feedback on the internet than they are positive… but don’t lose heart!

You can take matters into your own hands and actively pursue positive reviews. If you know you have happy customers don’t be afraid to get in touch with them and ask them to write something nice about you online.

Bear in mind, that having more positive online reviews will help to protect you against the impact of one bad review.

Have a good About Us page

These days, consumers want to know who they’re dealing with, who they’re supporting and who they’re spending their money with. You must have a good About Us page on your website so that they can find this all out with ease. Include photos if possible and a little bit of personal info about your team to increase trust in your brand.

Monitor your online activity

You’ve got to know what people are saying about you to be able to manage any problems as soon as they arise and to adjust your processes and procedures accordingly. Use tools such as, Twitter Search, and both Google and Yahoo alerts to keep on top of it all.

Run a blog

Blogs are helpful for all sorts of reasons (a topic we’ll discuss in depth in our next post on, you guessed it, our blog!) but they’re perfect for helping to prevent bad publicity. If something does happen that could impact your brand, take to the blog to issue a statement before anyone else can break the news.

In sub-Saharan Africa, an interesting relationship takes place hippos and oxpecker birds (honestly, bear with me on this one). The hippo needs help with the ticks and parasites that live on its skin and the oxpeckers help out by picking off the parasites and eating them. The oxpeckers get what they want – a tasty meal. And the hippo gets cleaner, healthier skin. It’s a win-win situation. It's impossible to say whether either species values the other—but each undoubtedly plays a vital role in the other's wellbeing. This example of mutualism often comes to mind when people talk about the relationship between journalists and PRs. It’s a case of mutuality, without question, but there’s often a simmering animosity between the two. To generate truly effective PR you need to understand the needs of both sides. And that’s where Flourish excels.

Let’s be honest - emojis aren’t just for group chats and Instagram captions anymore. Whether it’s a quick thumbs-up in a Teams chat or a cheeky smile in an email, those tiny icons have found their way into our professional lives. And depending on who you ask, that’s either a welcome shift towards more human connection… or a slippery slope into an unprofessional territory. We live in a world where so much of our communication happens through screens which means our tone of voice can get lost in translation. Emojis offer a way to soften messages, add personality, and make digital interactions feel just a little more, well, human. But here’s the big question: do emojis actually enhance professional communication, or do they risk making us seem less serious, less credible, or even less competent? In this blog, Flourish are diving into both sides of the emoji-in-business debate: the benefits, the backlash, and everything in between. Because love them or hate them, emojis are not going anywhere, and it is probably time we figure out how (and when) to use them wisely.

Since 2013, Flourish PR has been helping companies and individuals amplify their visibility through expertly crafted public relations strategies, compelling press releases, and perhaps most crucially in today's climate healthy backlinks. As SEO becomes increasingly competitive, it's easy for even established brands to fall behind in search rankings. While algorithm updates and AI-driven search continue to shift the digital landscape, one thing remains clear: quality backlinks and credible media coverage are still among the most effective tools for sustainable SEO growth. While sharing the knowledge below, we still maintain the importance of having a professional agency with extensive industry experience.
