Where Should Your Focus Be With Your Social Media Marketing?

There are a vast number of consumer touch points these days and social media platforms are among them. The majority of businesses understand that it’s important to have a presence on these social media sites and to be active on them, but where should you place your focus when it comes to social media interactions that will benefit your brand?

As an article for Entrepreneur recently pointed out, using social media as a business isn’t only about sharing engaging content and shouting about what you do. It’s also about managing negative feedback.

The news provider stressed that you shouldn’t just ignore negative comments, reviews or other little negative jabs at your business.

The advice is to respond to any negative feedback quickly and strategically. “Not only can you tamp down on negative feedback before it gains any ground, but quick responses will show that you listen and respond to customer concerns, even if they are negative,” it asserted.

You should also look at the negative comments or feedback you receive and use this as an opportunity to improve your products and services in the future.

The news provider also stressed the importance of considering your content marketing activity alongside your social media marketing activity. The two are intrinsically linked because social media provides a platform for you to distribute the content you produce.

In terms of who you’re talking to, it’s important not to fall into the trap of believing that social media is just a way to grow your audience and find new customers. It pointed out that, in fact, you should place much more of your focus on your existing customers and followers and produce and share content they will like.

It cited research that has found that the majority of people who follow corporate social media accounts were already fans of the brand before they followed them on these channels.

While social media can bring you new customers, it’s actually much more important as a way of engaging with your existing customers and keeping them coming back to your brand time and again.

In an article for Forbes recently, tech entrepreneur and writer Amine Rahal offered some advice to brands looking to improve their social media presence and output.

One of his top tips is to vary the types of post you put up. That means sharing videos as well as images, as well as varying the shape and orientation of your images.

He also recommended that you make time to post videos and photos to your stories. Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat all have this functionality and this is a simple way to share updates with your followers that generally takes a lot less time to prepare than other types of social media post.

Don’t be afraid of encouraging your customers and followers to generate some content for you too. This can be a great way of not only putting your brand in front of new people, but also of generating some authentic content with very little effort on your part.

In sub-Saharan Africa, an interesting relationship takes place hippos and oxpecker birds (honestly, bear with me on this one). The hippo needs help with the ticks and parasites that live on its skin and the oxpeckers help out by picking off the parasites and eating them. The oxpeckers get what they want – a tasty meal. And the hippo gets cleaner, healthier skin. It’s a win-win situation. It's impossible to say whether either species values the other—but each undoubtedly plays a vital role in the other's wellbeing. This example of mutualism often comes to mind when people talk about the relationship between journalists and PRs. It’s a case of mutuality, without question, but there’s often a simmering animosity between the two. To generate truly effective PR you need to understand the needs of both sides. And that’s where Flourish excels.

Let’s be honest - emojis aren’t just for group chats and Instagram captions anymore. Whether it’s a quick thumbs-up in a Teams chat or a cheeky smile in an email, those tiny icons have found their way into our professional lives. And depending on who you ask, that’s either a welcome shift towards more human connection… or a slippery slope into an unprofessional territory. We live in a world where so much of our communication happens through screens which means our tone of voice can get lost in translation. Emojis offer a way to soften messages, add personality, and make digital interactions feel just a little more, well, human. But here’s the big question: do emojis actually enhance professional communication, or do they risk making us seem less serious, less credible, or even less competent? In this blog, Flourish are diving into both sides of the emoji-in-business debate: the benefits, the backlash, and everything in between. Because love them or hate them, emojis are not going anywhere, and it is probably time we figure out how (and when) to use them wisely.
