What Is A Brand Ambassador & How Do You Get One?

You’re sure to have heard the phrase ‘influencer marketing’ over the last few years and it’s really come to the fore thanks to social media platforms taking centre stage. There are all sorts of people from all walks of life actually making a living for themselves through blogging, vlogging, tweeting, posting… and a lot of that is down to the support that they’re offered by brands, big and small.

But in reality, influencer marketing has been around for quite some time, although you might well have come across the concept in the past under the guise of brand ambassadorships. This is a kind of marketing campaign that will put your brand and its key messages in the hand of someone with influence, someone who can successfully represent the culture of your business to the general public.

It’s essential that you find the right kind of brand ambassador that fits your business profile perfectly , or the campaign won’t be as successful as it could be. A good ambassador will be innately professional, someone who will treat their new role as if they’re a fully-fledged part of your company – even though they’re not technically employed by your brand.

Remember that whoever you partner up with will be representing your company, talking about you and encouraging other people to invest in your goods and services… so do make sure the person you’re going to align yourself with won’t embarrass you or bring your company into disrepute. They should share the same values as you and you should have processes and procedures in place just in case you do need to distance yourself for some reason.

They should also have a good understanding of the world of marketing themselves, since that’s going to play a big part in what they’ll be doing for you. It would also be very useful indeed for them to have a strong social media presence because from your perspective you want to reach as many people as you can across numerous platforms and channels.

So how can you go about finding one for yourself? Just because someone leaves you a good review online doesn’t mean they’ll cut the mustard in this regard. You need someone passionate enough about what you do that you can turn to them repeatedly when you want to showcase something or have some news shared somewhere. Brand ambassadors are those who will wax lyrical about your company for a prolonged period, not just once or twice.

Take a look at your current followers to see if you have anyone who would fit all the necessary criteria. Happy customers are a good choice although if they lack experience in this arena you may need to give them content for them to share.

Whoever you choose, remember that gratitude goes a long way so make sure they receive just rewards for the work they do on your behalf.

Public relations (PR) is not a new invention. In fact, the precursor to modern PR can trace its origins back centuries to the early days of mass media in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Of course, the world has changed considerably since then and the arrival of the internet forced the PR profession, along with many others, to evolve once again. This is when digital PR entered the frame. What is digital PR? As its name suggests, digital PR specifically focuses on reaching your customers in their online worlds. It’s not the same as digital marketing, but digital PR activities should tie in closely with your broader marketing strategy. Digital PR is all about starting conversations with your audience and making sure they see and hear from you in an increasingly noisy online environment. That means it needs to be carefully targeted to ensure it not only reaches the right people but that it also delivers the right message. In this way, it is not dissimilar to traditional PR, which involves placing clients in relevant print publications or broadcast shows to widen their reach. However, in the digital world, life works slightly differently. This means targeted campaigns are particularly important and the messaging you use needs to be adapted for different channels.

In sub-Saharan Africa, an interesting relationship takes place hippos and oxpecker birds (honestly, bear with me on this one). The hippo needs help with the ticks and parasites that live on its skin and the oxpeckers help out by picking off the parasites and eating them. The oxpeckers get what they want – a tasty meal. And the hippo gets cleaner, healthier skin. It’s a win-win situation. It's impossible to say whether either species values the other—but each undoubtedly plays a vital role in the other's wellbeing. This example of mutualism often comes to mind when people talk about the relationship between journalists and PRs. It’s a case of mutuality, without question, but there’s often a simmering animosity between the two. To generate truly effective PR you need to understand the needs of both sides. And that’s where Flourish excels.
