My Time at FlourishPR - Hannah Woodhead, Summer Intern

A bit about myself:

I am 18 and have just finished A-levels. I am looking to go to Royal Holloway university to study History. My favourite sport is netball and I go to the gym every day.

Have I ever worked in PR before?

No, I have not.

How have I been keeping myself busy over the lockdown period?

Exercise and revision

What are my main hobbies and interests?

The gym and History

What made me want to enter the world of PR?

My interest in social media and the impact it has had on the modern-day style of living.

What is my dream holiday?

I don’t have a particular on. My two that I really want to do is Egypt and India to ride the Elephants.

What is something that I want to accomplish in life?

To work to the best of my ability in everything I do and to stay as healthy as possible.

What is my favourite film?

I don’t have a particular one. I like all action and funny films.

If I could invent one thing right now, what would it be?

A shopping trolly that is split up into light stuff and heavy stuff because the fruit and veg is always the first aisle in a supermarket so always gets squashed when you get to the end.

What it’s like working for Flourish:

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Flourish. I have met some amazing people along the way creating an upbeat, hard-working environment.

What key skills did I learn?

I have learnt a variety of skills, but the ones that I have the most useful have been the ability to understand social media and the type of content published, to get certain affect from its viewers. Also, the understanding for journalists and how to grab their attention has been fascinating. I have had the opportunity to be in contact with some of these journalists and understand their thought process and what they want to see when pitching to them. I have also learnt how important annual events and the impact of news is. Everything on the media is somehow an opportunity for a client or influences the client in a way.

How long was my internship?

My internship was 2 months

Did I feel that I was equipped to do my job well?

I always felt very equipped when assigned with tasks. The team was amazing in supporting me and being available to guide me if I was struggling.

Am I still looking for a career in PR?

I have decided that after gaining experience in PR, I am looking to do this as a future career. Although I am not entirely set on what I want to do, I certainly feel that PR is a strong contestant.

Did I receive constructive feedback and information that will benefit me in my future career?

Through my experience, I have obtained valuable tips and information that helped me to grow my knowledge. I received constant help and guidance which I know will be extremely beneficial in my future career.

Would I recommend this as a great place for a friend to work?

I would highly recommend this to a friend, it has been a great place to work. Being a paid internship as well, socially and academically I have benefited.

In sub-Saharan Africa, an interesting relationship takes place hippos and oxpecker birds (honestly, bear with me on this one). The hippo needs help with the ticks and parasites that live on its skin and the oxpeckers help out by picking off the parasites and eating them. The oxpeckers get what they want – a tasty meal. And the hippo gets cleaner, healthier skin. It’s a win-win situation. It's impossible to say whether either species values the other—but each undoubtedly plays a vital role in the other's wellbeing. This example of mutualism often comes to mind when people talk about the relationship between journalists and PRs. It’s a case of mutuality, without question, but there’s often a simmering animosity between the two. To generate truly effective PR you need to understand the needs of both sides. And that’s where Flourish excels.

Let’s be honest - emojis aren’t just for group chats and Instagram captions anymore. Whether it’s a quick thumbs-up in a Teams chat or a cheeky smile in an email, those tiny icons have found their way into our professional lives. And depending on who you ask, that’s either a welcome shift towards more human connection… or a slippery slope into an unprofessional territory. We live in a world where so much of our communication happens through screens which means our tone of voice can get lost in translation. Emojis offer a way to soften messages, add personality, and make digital interactions feel just a little more, well, human. But here’s the big question: do emojis actually enhance professional communication, or do they risk making us seem less serious, less credible, or even less competent? In this blog, Flourish are diving into both sides of the emoji-in-business debate: the benefits, the backlash, and everything in between. Because love them or hate them, emojis are not going anywhere, and it is probably time we figure out how (and when) to use them wisely.

Since 2013, Flourish PR has been helping companies and individuals amplify their visibility through expertly crafted public relations strategies, compelling press releases, and perhaps most crucially in today's climate healthy backlinks. As SEO becomes increasingly competitive, it's easy for even established brands to fall behind in search rankings. While algorithm updates and AI-driven search continue to shift the digital landscape, one thing remains clear: quality backlinks and credible media coverage are still among the most effective tools for sustainable SEO growth. While sharing the knowledge below, we still maintain the importance of having a professional agency with extensive industry experience.
